UNION Law Minister Veerappa Moily has slammed the Justice B K Somasekhara commission report on church attacks in Karnataka.

He has also favored a CBI investigation to reaffirm confidence among Christians.

Talking to mediapersons on Jan 29, he said: “Just because a commission gave a report, the truth cannot be suppressed. Chief Minister Yeddyurappa should order a CBI probe to restore people’s faith in democracy.

Moily accused the BJP government of hijacking the commission to ensure it gave a clean chit to the party and the Sangh Parivar outfits for attacks on churches in 2008 in Karnataka.

“Any commission’s final report should be an extension of the interim report but in this case it’s the opposite,” he said. The interim report had mentioned the involvement of Bajrang Dal in the attacks.

The attacks on churches in seven districts across the state had caused a major embarrassment to the first-ever BJP government in the south barely four months after it assumed office following which the judicial inquiry was ordered.
