violence-against-womenON an average, close to 100 women are being raped in India, according to the National Crime Records Bureau data.

There has been a gradual increase in the number of rapes reported in the country, the NCRB data shows. While 24,923 rapes were reported in 2012, it increased by 35 percent – to 33,707 in 2013.

Delhi tops Indian cities as the most unsafe city for women. The national capital reported 1,441 rape cases in 2013. It was only 585 in 2012. Mumbai, Jaipur and Pune follow Delhi as the other unsafe cities in the country.

Among the Indian states, Madhya Pradesh has recorded the maximum number of rapes in 2013. There were as many as 4,335 rape cases reported in that State. It is followed by Rajasthan (3285), Maharashtra (3,063) and Uttar Pradesh (3,050).

In Tamil Nadu, as many as three rape cases are reported every day. The state reported 923 rape cases last year.

Times of India reported that the most horrifying fact is that majority of the offenders are known to the victims. NCRB statistics shows that 31,807 (94%) were familiar to the accused, which includes neighbours (10782), other known persons (18171), relatives (2315) and parents (539).

Most victims are aged between 18 and 30 years (15,556) and 14 and 18 years (8,877), the report added.
