ALMOST two years after he was nominated ambassador to India by President Joe Biden, Eric Garcetti arrived in India on Tuesday to assume charge as head of the US mission in New Delhi.
Garcetti has studied Hindi and also Indian culture and history at Columbia University.
The former Los Angeles Mayor’s appointment was delayed because of a legal battle that followed allegations that he had papered over charges of sexual harassment against an aide. His appointment was confirmed in a bipartisan vote by the Senate last month, 20 months after he was nominated.
Garcetti was the youngest mayor in LA’s history. His arrival comes at a time when both sides are grappling with issues related to Russia’s actions in Ukraine and also China’s increasing assertiveness over Arunachal Pradesh.
