Delightful Desires

Ultimately, when God gives you the desires of your heart, He’s giving you the desires of His heart. What could be any better than that?

Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 BSB

DEAR Delightful One,

Your attitude determines your altitude—that is, how far you go and how high you fly! My high-school principal, Dr. Clara Walters, believed in this maxim and taught all her students to live by it. Your attitude can open or close doors; it can affect the atmosphere of a room, either positively or negatively.

This leads to a very important question: “What is your attitude toward God?” Excitement? Happiness? Obligation? Responsibility? Do you sometimes believe that if you suffer doing the things God likes rather than the things you like, then someday you will ascend to heaven and be rewarded with overwhelming joy? That is not what He wants!

I genuinely believe that God wants us to be happy and excited about our relationship with Him. He wants us to live a prosperous and healthy life full of purpose. I also believe our life on earth is a journey of bringing our desires, beliefs, and passions into alignment with those of our Creator. This involves experiencing God’s rhythm and starting to move in step with Him. And that, my friends, is the greatest joy ever.

I envision dancing with God, much like the joy of a loving daughter dancing with her proud father. The process of becoming who God designed us to be should be a meaningful and treasured adventure, not a miserable and painful crusade.

In Psalm 37, David writes that we should not “fret” but “trust” in the Lord. We should “delight” in the Lord. We should “commit” our ways to the Lord. We should “rest” in the Lord and “wait” patiently for Him. And we should “cease from anger.” But let’s focus on today’s verse, which commands us to “delight… in the Lord.” It’s a directive to sow and harvest our greatest pleasures and satisfaction from the Lord. We  must redirect our attention from delighting in ourselves to delighting in God! But how do we do that? We must immerse
ourselves in His word, which demands effort on our part. We have to do this. We have to discover and know Him, learn His likes and dislikes. As we uncover what pleases God, this
shapes and influences what pleases us. We start to move in sync with God until our desires are in perfect alignment with His desires.

Ultimately, when God gives you the desires of your heart, He’s giving you the desires of His heart. What could be any better than that? So, today, let’s study, pray, reflect, wash ourselves in His word, and we will be aligned with our God, delighting in Him, and receiving the desires of our heart… and His. That’s a recipe for an abundant, joy-filled life.

Delighting in God,

Prayer

Lord, we thank You, and we bless You now. We thank You for this day. We pray Your blessings upon it; we pray for strength and peace. We pray, God, that You will keep our minds focused on You and help us in our pursuits; that we will pursue You; that we will chase after You. We pray that our relationship with You will deepen, that we will gain a greater understanding of You and that our desires will align with Yours. God, we pray for prosperity, peace, and good health. We pray for a fresh revelation, that the Holy Spirit will fill in the gaps. God, we love You and we bless You; in the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
