Andrew-Chan-Mayuran-SukumaranAustralian drug smugglers Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan prayed with their spiritual adviser up until the moment he was led from his cell to be executed unblindfolded by a firing squad, a pastor says.

According to Pastor Rob Buckingham, whose wife Christie Buckingham provided support to Sukumaran in the hours before his death, the pair spent the hours leading up to the execution in prayer.

Ms Buckingham and Andrew Chan’s nominated spiritual adviser Major David Soper did not witness the execution “but were nearby”, Mr Buckingham said.

“She spent all evening with him, until he was taken out with the [others] to be executed,” he said.

“I can tell you though that they spent a good time in prayer together and worship together.

“She’s doing OK. Obviously she’s grieved by what has taken place, and she’s just been standing strong with the boys and with the families since Saturday when she arrived in Cilacap.”

Mr Buckingham said Sukumaran was “very definite” about refusing to wear a blindfold at the time of his execution because he said: “I want to look my executioners in the eye.” RT
