Cardinal-Baselios-CleemisTHE 71-year-old rape survivor has forgiven the bandits, but the authorities must ensure that justice is made visible, the head of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, said on Wednesday.

Cardinal Cleemis visited the Convent of Jesus and Mary High School at Ranaghat in West Bengal’s Nadia district where the alleged incident occurred on March 14 and also the met the nun who is admitted to a State-run hospital there.

“The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India would like to request the authorities that justice is done. The sisters have forgiven but justice has to be made visible,” he said.

Stating that he was here to see personally see what happened, Cardinal Cleemis said he and the sister both prayed for everyone.

The Cardinal, who also met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee later in the day, welcomed her decision to order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the incident. “The CM has ordered a CBI probe and we are very happy and satisfied. We hope for the best,” he told journalists at the State Secretariat.

Though the brutalisation of the elderly nun has triggered nationwide outrage, with the Prime Minister and the National Human Rights Commission seeking report from the State, no arrest has been made in the case so far. The Hindu
