AN atheist billboard that declared Christmas as a ‘myth’ was replaced with a Christian ad before Dec 25 in the US.

The new billboard declares ‘God is’ and features a collage of words and phrases including ‘good’, ‘alive’, ‘Jesus’, ‘aware of your struggle’, and ‘the one who loved you.’

The ad is located near the Lincoln Tunnel in New Jersey and is sponsored by Times Square Church. Early this year, the church had also had the ads plastered on some 1,000 New York City subway cars.

Talking about the decision to replace the atheist banner, Senior Pastor Carter Conlon said: “We want to encourage people to seek God and prove that indeed He is.”

He said the ad describes God “in just a few of the infinite ways He proves His presence to us every day.”

The church’s attempt is the second pro-God campaign to hit New Jersey since American Atheists launched its anti-Christmas billboard. For close to a month, the humanist group had an ad that depicted three wise men visiting baby Jesus in the manger with the words ‘You know it’s a myth. This season celebrate reason.”

As expected, the billboard drew attention and sparked off several debates.

Countering the atheists’ campaign, the Catholic League responded by sponsoring its own billboard near the exit of the Lincoln Tunnel in New York. The ad features Joseph, Mary and Jesus with the phrase ‘You know it’s real. This season, celebrate Jesus.”

The Times Square Church draws over 8,000 people every week.
