Syrian troopsSYRIAN security forces have killed at least 13 people in a continued military assault on anti-government protesters.

The violence Sunday came on the first day of the Muslim Eid al-Adha festival, and just days after the government of President Bashar al-Assad agreed to an Arab League peace plan in which the government promised to end its crackdown against the uprising.

The crackdown prompted the prime minister of Qatar to call for an emergency meeting for next Saturday to discuss the Syrian government’s failure to abide by its commitments.

Most of the deaths were in the central Syrian city of Homs.  It is the fifth consecutive day in what anti-government activists say is an ongoing military campaign against the city, considered the center of opposition in the eight-month uprising against Mr. Assad.

The United Nations says the number of people killed during the uprising has topped 3,000.
