Orissa village priest struck with an arrow, tribal lynched

A Christian priest identified as Jiban Masi Munda (70) was killed with an arrow allegedly darted by a tribal in a village in Orissa’s Sundargarh district.

Police said J M Munda, who was the vicar of a village church in Badaraxi in K Balang area about 100 km from Rourkela was struck with an arrow in his house. The tribal who darted the arrow was identified by the police as 35-year-old Manamasi Topo.

The incident is said to have occurred on Sunday night.

Topo, who tried to flee after the arrow struck the priest, was caught by villagers who beat him to death, investigating officer B K Beg said.

He said the priest and Topo belonged to the same tribe. Police said although the exact cause for the attack was yet to be determined Topo was alleged to have been suffering from depression for some time.
