THE techies are going to love this one. IPhone users can now visit Judaism’s holiest site from anywhere in the world.
The Israeli foundation that administers the Western Wall in Jerusalem has launched an iPhone application that streams live from the prayer site around the clock – except on the Jewish Sabbath and holidays, when transmissions are forbidden by Jewish law.
According to a release, the application allows users to email prayers to be placed in the crevices of the wall, a Jewish custom. It also includes a compass that allows users to pray in the direction of Jerusalem.
Michal Ophir of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation says the application ‘brings the Western Wall to every Jew in the world because it is the heart of the Jewish people.’
The wall is a remnant of the biblical Jewish temple.
