THE Christian community of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali today conducted a candle march here in protest against the gangrape of a septuagenarian nun at Ranaghat in West Bengal last week.
A number of Christians started their candle march from Christ the King Cathedral in sector 19 and ended at sector 17 plaza.
The march was organised to reflect concern with the elderly nun of a convent at Ranaghat who was brutally “raped”, said priest Ambrose D’Souza of Christ the King Cathedral, Chandigarh, in a release here.
“Physical violence inflicted on religious women, the rape of an old and sick nun, the desecration of consecrated hosts, are ruthless and inhumane acts, of which all citizens of India should be ashamed,” he said.
Through this march, the Christian Community of tricity –Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, would like to send a message of concern, anguish, pain and solidarity to the sisters at Ranaghat (West Bengal), D’Souza said.
“The entire Christian community of the region while being very concerned and anxious about the future situation in our country are prepared to continue to contribute their might in serving their motherland India with extra zeal, enthusiasm and commitments,” he said.
Bishops also expressed serious concern over alleged attack on churches in different parts of the country.
For the last five months or so our country had been witnessing a series of attacks on the churches in different part of our country and last week a church which was under construction was demolished. Such an ideology that seeks to create distrust and hate with consequences that must be avoided at all cost, he said.
The march was led by Ignatius L Mascarenhas the Bishop of Simla-Chandigarh Diocese, Dominic Bosco the Vicar general, and many pastors of different denominations.PTI
