AN American activist based in Connecticut, US, began a bread and water fast on November 28 to get people to focus on Christmas as the focal point of human history, the birth of Christ, and to say ‘Merry Christmas.’

Seventy-year-old Ned Coll has been on a religious quest for 20 years calling people to follow Jesus Christ.

“The purpose of the fast is basically to get people to focus on Christmas,” Coll said.

Coll thinks ‘happy holidays’ is a creation of Madison Avenue. The non-religious greeting is scorned by evangelical Christians.

“The standard thing (in the past) for people to say was ‘Merry Christmas and happy New Year’, and that’s been completely eliminated as much as possible by Madison Avenue,” he said.

Coll has been walking and fasting for Jesus after he had a conversion experience on Pentecost in 1990.

“The message was that God was angry about the greed in this country…I walked 6,000 miles for the spiritual renewal of this country,” he said.
